The Most Important Step In Reaching Any Goal

There are several steps in making sure the goal you've set is a SMART one, 5 to be exact. Your goal should be Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. SMART is widely accepted as the best way to set a goal. If your goal fits this criteria, you're well on your way to achieving whatever your goal may be; however, SMART doesn't address the most important aspect of your goal.

START WITH WHY

Why do you want to lose 15 pounds? Why do you want to put on 10 pounds of muscle? Why do you want to add 20 pounds to your bench press? In every single consultation, after an individual tells me their goal, my first question is "Why?" Why is ______ your goal? What would reaching that goal mean to you? Dig deep here. "I want to fit into these pants again." Why do you want to fit in those pants? "I want to be stronger." Why do you want to be stronger? If you can dig down and find your true, deeply rooted reason for wanting to achieve a goal, you will have a much greater chance of success.

This extends way beyond fitness. This applies to any goal you can set in life. It could (and should) be applied to career goals, relational goals, charitable goals, the list goes on and on. If you're interested in reading more on this topic I highly recommend Start With Why by Simon Sinek.
